Project Description
Description

Following upon a New Zealand example, and following upon the weakening of the powers of the Swan River Trust (See http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/axing-of-swan-river-trust-angers-conservationists-20130926-2ugji.html) , this project aims to establish a precedent by establishing the legal personhood of river called in Noongar the Derbal Yerrigan.

Derbarl Yerrigan describes the Swan River and some elders say that it’s the place of the fresh water turtle….However, the words Derbarl Yerrigan do not literally translate as Swan River. The literal translation for Derbarl Yerrigan is Narlak (Swan) Beeliar (River).”

Derbarl Yerrigan is understood to refer to fresh water or brackish water turtle Dreaming along the river.
